What is Homesteading? Homesteading is about a way of life and becoming more self sufficient. Gaining skills and knowledge about growing your own food. Growing a homestead garden takes work, but end results are worth it.
Today were going to focus on the basic information you need to know about growing amazing fruits and vegetables on your homestead.
Getting started with your homestead garden
The first thing you need to determine is the location of your garden. This may take some time and it may take a season or to. you should know your land before you set up your garden space. Make sure there is enough sunlight and that the area doesn’t stay wet. On a homestead gardens tend to be on the larger side because as a homesteader, were trying to grown enough food to provide a good amount for our family. This may be for preserving and current eating of course. After you have picked to perfect location. the next step is to decide how big its going to be.
Garden size matters to your homestead
Starting small is always a option if your new to gardening you don’t want to overwhelm yourself. Having a garden that you can’t keep up with is no good and every time you turn around another problem popped up, is no fun. layout a plan of what your wanting to grow and how your going to grow it. How to pick what your going to grow?
To start make a list of what your family like to eat first. Those are going to be the things that you want to grow. For instance were in zone 9 so we grow things that will stand up to the Texas heat. Remember to keep in mind your last frost date. You can start seeds indoors or a greens house to give you a head start though.
Starting from seed or Started plants
Now That you have determined your zone. Now it’s the fun part. Picking out the seeds or you always have the option of going to your local garden shop and getting started plants from their. I will say that starting from seed you will get more of a variety of planets to pick from. Another bonus with growing your own plants from seed is that it’s way cheaper. But come flipping through pages of gorgeous tomatoes just makes me happy!
